Getting Around in Helsinki

Helsinki is one of the easiest cities in Europe to navigate with children. Its public transportation system (trams, buses, and metro) is clean, punctual, stroller-friendly, and well-heated, perfect for cold days when walking long distances isn’t ideal. We recommend downloading the HSL app to check routes and buy tickets ahead of time. For shorter distances, walking is a joy—just bundle up! The streets are well-maintained and safe, even with snow.

Winter tip: Bring waterproof boots, warm gloves, and layered clothing. We also kept hand warmersand snacks in our bag to make outdoor exploring with kids more comfortable.

Where to stay in Helsinki

For our family trip, we chose to stay in an Airbnb, which was super convenient for our big group. Having an apartment with multiple rooms and a kitchen made things much easier when travelling with family —it gave us space to relax, cook meals, and feel at home.

We always like to book places with a kitchen so we can pop into local grocery stores, try traditional Finnish products (like rye bread, local cheeses, and cloudberry jam!), and save money by eating some meals at home. Helsinki has a great selection of apartments, whether you’re a couple or traveling with extended family.

Best Activities you can’t miss in Helsinki with Kids

After spending 2 days in Helsinki with our kid and parents, here are our best recommendations.

1. Helsinki Cathedral & Senate Square

The heart of the city! The iconic Helsinki Cathedral, with its neoclassical beauty, towers above Senate Square, which looks like a snow globe scene in winter. Our Kid loved the open space to play in the snow while we soaked in the surroundings. Nearby shops and cafés offer the perfect warm-up break with a cinnamon bun or hot cocoa.

2. Helsinki Christmas Market

Located right in Senate Square, the Christmas Market is filled with local artisans, handmade gifts, warm drinks, and the smell of roasted nuts in the air. There’s even a little carousel for kids, and festive music adds to the magic. The view of the lit-up cathedral at night is unforgettable.

3. Old Market Hall (Vanha Kauppahalli)

Old Market Hall is a cozy indoor spot for lunch or warming up! This historic market near the harbor has been serving locals since 1889 and is filled with Finnish specialties like smoked fish, reindeer snacks, fresh pastries, and more.

We had lunch at Story, a family-friendly spot inside the market. Story offers a delightful blend of Scandinavian flavors and modern design. Whether you’re seeking a hearty breakfast, or a lunch, Story provides a welcoming atmosphere with a menu that celebrates Finnish culinary traditions.

4. Hakaniemi Market Hall

Another great winter indoor activity! This market has two floors: downstairs is all about fresh produce and local foods, while upstairs is packed with handmade crafts and woolen goods. This Hakaniemi Market is great for souvenirs or extra layers if you need them.

Bonus: Fewer tourists here than in the Old Market Hall, and the vendors are super welcoming to kids.

5. SEA LIFE Helsinki

Looking for a break from the cold? SEA LIFE is a hit with families. Kids will love walking through the tunnel surrounded by sharks and tropical fish. There are touch tanks, a play area, and educational exhibits that explain how the creatures are protected. It’s not huge, but it’s well-curated and easy to do in about 1.5 hours. And most importantly, it’s warm inside!

6. Fazer Café

A sweet stop before heading home. Fazer Café is part café, part chocolate dreamland, home to Finland’s most famous chocolate brand. We stopped here for pastries, coffee, and a well-earned rest. They also sell gorgeous gift boxes and seasonal chocolate treats if you want to bring a little taste of Finland back with you.
