Best Tours to visit Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve from Tulum

There are several ways to visit Sian Ka’an, depending on your time, budget, and adventure level. Here are the best tours and options to visit Sian Ka’an Biosphere:
Option 1: Sian Ka’an + Manatees and Crocodile Encounter
Perfect if you want to see and do as much as possible. Most full-day tours include boat rides, wildlife spotting, swimming, and flotting on Maya Canals. You start the tour by driving to Campechen lagoon, around 40 minutes drive from Tulum. Here are two great choices:
- Viajes Conciencia with Adrian (the one we chose!)
We loved this option because it’s more personal and focused on conscious travel. Adrian’s “Manatees and Mayan Channels” tour was calm, educational, and family-friendly. You float through mangroves, spot wildlife, and learn about the reserve’s history from a local guide.
Option 2: Sian Ka’an + Dolphins Encounter
These tours required to go to Punta Allen, which isn’t exactly easy—it involves a rugged 2-hour journey along unpaved road from Tulum. However, offers a unique way to explore the coastal side of Sian Ka’an, where you’ll find vibrant marine life, coral reefs, and untouched beaches. It’s a great spot for spotting dolphins, turtles, and in their natural habitat.
- Viator’s “Sian Ka’an Adventure Full Day Trip to Punta Allen”
This tour includes boat rides through lagoons, spotting dolphins, turtles, and birds in their natural habitat. - Viajes Conciencia also offers a tour to explore Sian Ka’an from Punta Allen.
Option 3: Sian Ka’an + Mayan Ruins Combo
Want a mix of culture and nature? This combo tour is for you. With Get Your Guide’s “Muyil Ruins and Sian Ka’an” tour, you’ll visit an ancient Mayan site and then float down crystal-clear canals surrounded by mangroves. It’s a peaceful and fascinating mix of history and nature.

Best Experience Inside the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve
Floating the maya canals is one of the best experiences in the Sian ka’an biosphere. What makes this experience so unique is that you get to float on ancient canals dug over a thousand years ago. These waterways were vital for trade, agriculture, and rituals. Surrounded by mangroves and crystal-clear water, the experience is magical!

Here’s how it works:
- You start with a boat ride across the lagoon and through the mangroves.
- Then, you’ll stop at a small wooden dock, leave your stuff on the boat and walk about 10 minutes along a boardwalk.
- You will wear a life jacket, and hand your shoes to the captain, who will return them to the boat.
- No sunscreen is allowed (to protect the water), so bring a long-sleeve shirt and a hat.
- Once in the water, you just float. The current gently carries you for about 30–45 minutes through the most peaceful, clear water you’ve ever seen.
We even did it with our 1-year-old! It’s completely safe in that area—no crocodiles—and the experience was pure magic.

The order of the experience might change depending on where your tour starts. If your tour begins from the coast (Campechen lagoon), you’ll usually walk the boardwalk first, follow by the floating through the ancient Mayan canals. If your tour starts in Muyil, you’ll likely float first and then walk the boardwalk through the mangroves—it’s magical!
